Garden Haul

Four weeks ago I planted some little lettuce seedlings in my new vegetable patch. I have given them daily care, making certain there are no bugs or weeds. Offering water and seaweed fertiliser.

With lots of love and nurturing one of them has grown and flourished to look like this.

So… I pulled one out of the ground and put it on my turkey and cheese sandwich.

I feel so guilty for eating one of my babies…

Ooh, garden-fresh lettuce on your turkey sandwich…divine!! Besides, your lettuce looks ‘good enough to eat’…so, why wouldn’t you..haha.

Yuuuuummy! Ours aren’t doing nearly so well – and it’s supposed to be summer here!

Perfect! That guilt is preferable to later on when you suddenly discover you have let some get too old bitter and past their best.

Fast turn around is good – get some more plants started. Your sandwich looks well……very deliciously edible.

( I nearly typed quilt not guilt as it is a much more frequently used word around here )

It’s a food chain thing. Veggies are on the low end, things with teeth on the high end. That lettuce looks scrumptious.

RIGHT! You’ve all made me feel so good about eating my own baby lettuces that I’m off to pick another one for my lunch today!

Erm… I thought you could just pick leaves, & prolong their life? Why did I think that?
Perhaps I am confusing them with Rocket.

Doesn’t lettuce fresh from the garden taste so tender and flavourful?

(Though speaking about eating babies, cannibals probably say the same thing…)

I am so jealous! my lettuce is not big enough yet! My head lettuce is starting to look more like a ball now though :)
